About the Artist
Statement & Brief Biography

The canvas is my own universe,  my own playground.
It is a place for endless freedom and expression.

Working on a  canvas is, in a sense, a microcosm of our life experience.
There are times of elation and times of doubt and despair, but once
committed to the work, there's no turning back.
                             It's about perseverance.

I search for that place of communal consciousness.
When successful,  the painting suddenly resolves itself
and I'm free to move on to another canvas.

There's a 1st level mind,  it sees what's up front, the pictures,
and then there's a 2nd level mind,  it sees and feels the passion behind
the images.  This is where I'm going with my work,  I don't stop until
I get there.  It's like a "heart sutra",  stitching your heart to what is real.

Biography

Tom Scott Reno is an abstract painter. His goal is to relate a feeling of balance
                               and
centeredness, along with a place for the mind to go, worthy of contemplation.

Tom was born in Hollywood, California in 1948. He grew up in Southern California,
asking questions about life and existence.

He enlisted in the army in 1967 and served in Viet Nam in 1968 and was honorably
discharged in 1970.  Upon returning to civilian life he drifted for a while throughout
the Western United States, living in British Columbia for a time.
 His travels also
                               included France and England.

In 1977 he moved to the California Central Coast where he found his kinship with
                               artists, musicians and thinkers.

The next 25 years were spent developing the skills of a sign painter
                               and the philosophy
of a yogi.

His philosophical perspectives along with the qualities of a well crafted sign,
balance, line, color and personality, have coalesced into his present work.

He lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico with artist Paula Zima, 3 cats, 2 horses.
